Connectivity Comparisons between National and Local Networks based on HS2 and HSUK

If you’re going to spend upwards of £100 billion to transform the UK rail network, it makes sense to choose the scheme that delivers the greatest possible enhancement in national, regional and local network connectivity.

Regrettably, the Government and its professional advisors have never bothered to do the rigorous analysis necessary to check that their HS2 proposals will deliver the best network.

So it’s fallen to us to establish the core technical principles, and to do the comparisons instead.  On one hand we’ve considered the HS2 ‘Y-network’ and its subsidiary Northern Powerhouse Rail and Midlands Rail Hub schemes.  And on the other hand we’ve considered our own High Speed UK scheme.

These are the comparisons that we’ve sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

1. National intercity connectivity

We’ve compared the performance of national networks based

on a) HS2 and b) HSUK.

2. An Integrated Rail Plan for the Midlands

We’ve projected the performances of Integrated Rail Plans based

on a) HS2 and b) HSUK.

3. An Integrated Rail Plan for the North

We’ve projected the performances of Integrated Rail Plans based

on a) HS2 and b) HSUK.

4. Strengthened Links between UK Nations

Our submission to the Union Connectivity Review provides detailed

comparisons between HS2’s and HSUK’s performance in

transforming links between the UK nations.
